During his heyday, Mike was one of the most famous and highest-paid athletes in the world. He was the youngest champion in history at age 20. Unfortunately, he squandered and/or was bilked out of a personal fortune that topped $300 million at his peak.

Despite being known as one of the greatest boxers of all time, Mike Tyson’s net worth is surprisingly low. Mike Tyson is estimated to have accrued over $300million throughout his boxing career, but ended up losing it all.

Forbes claim his total career earnings could even have been as high as $685million.However, as of 2021 Tyson’s net worth is estimated to be just $3m, according to Wealthy Gorilla.

Like many sporting superstars, Tyson spent his money as quickly as he earned it on big expensive houses, flashy cars and even pet tigers.

The 53-year-old has been divorced twice, now on his third marriage and has a total of eight children.

He also served three years in prison after being convicted of rape in 1992.In 2003, Tyson was forced to file for bankruptcy, with media at the time reporting he had $23m worth of debt.

History

Mike Tyson was born Michael Gerard Tyson on June 30th of 1966 in Brooklyn New York. Tyson grew up in a rough neighborhood, and his stepfather was involved in crime and gambling. When Tyson was ten, he and his mother moved because of financial issues.

Throughout his childhood, Tyson lived in and around high-crime neighborhoods. He’s mentioned in a past interview that his first fight was with a bigger youth, who had pulled the head off one of his pigeons. He ended up at the Tryon School for Boys in Johnstown, and later dropped out of high school.

By the age of 13, Tyson had been arrested for 38 crimes, often fighting bigger youths who made fun of his voice (Tyson speaks with a lisp). During school, Tyson’s fighting ability was discovered by a juvenile detention instructor and a former boxer.

After working with a few trainers, he linked up with Cus D’Amatto – a trainer who would have an immense influence on the future boxing champ. When Tyson’s mother passed away when he was 16, D’Amatto became his legal guardian. Tyson also worked with Kevin Rooney from a young age.

Career

Tyson was 18 years old when he made his professional debut in boxing. Prior to that, he’d competed as an amateur in the Junior Olympics.

He quickly grew to become the champion, after winning 26 of his first 28 fights by either KO or TKO. For a long time, people thought Tyson was unbeatable. That was, until Buster Douglas came along. You’ve probably heard Douglas’ story about his mother passing away before the fight, after telling everyone her son was going to beat Mike Tyson.

Douglas managed to last more rounds than anybody else had ever gone to with Tyson; and after reaching that point, realized that Tyson began to lose energy and stamina rapidly after the 5 or 6th round.

Tyson was the first heavyweight boxer to simultaneously hold the WBA, WBC and IBF titles, and the only heavyweight to unify them successively. He is still considered, to this day, one of the best boxers of all time.

However, his reputation was very much stained after being sentenced to prison for 6 years, after being convicted of rape. He tried to make a comeback after his prison sentence, but it was short-lived.

Mike Tyson’s net worth, once upon a time, was $300 million. After splashing the cash, and suffering from the consequences of some of his actions; Mike Tyson’s net worth is now only $3 million.

Education

Tyson attended the Tryon School for Boys in Johnstown, and he ended up dropping out of high school to pursue a career in boxing.

Personal Life

Mike has been married three times. He has six children. He is a Muslim and practices sobriety.

How He Made His Huge Amounts Of Money

Mike Tyson was the undisputed boxing world heavyweight champion, holding the record for the youngest boxer to win the heavyweight title, at 20-years, 4-months, and 22-days old.

Tyson was also the first-ever heavyweight to simultaneously hold the WBC, WBA, and IBF titles and the only heavyweight, to unify the belts. Tyson competed in the Junior Olympics, winning a gold medal, and he turned pro at 18.

Mike was a terrifying opponent, and it took him longer than necessary to become the champ because no one wanted to fight the knockout artist. Mike won 26 of 28 fights by KO or TKO, and many boxing experts view him as the greatest heavyweight of all time, alongside Muhammad Ali.

While Tyson netted millions throughout his career, his relationship with Robin Givens destroyed the boxer’s wealth and mental health. Many boxing enthusiasts say Mike would have been the greatest ever if he never met her.

Mike returned to the ring in 2021 for an exhibition match with Roy Jones Jr, landing him a $10 million purse, quadrupling his wealth overnight. We expect him to make even more from his fight with influencer Logan Paul in early 2022.

How He Lost His Fortune

Like many sporting superstars, Tyson spent his money as quickly as he earned it on big expensive houses, flashy cars and even pet tigers.

The 53-year-old has been divorced twice, now on his third marriage and has a total of eight children.

He also served three years in prison after being convicted of rape in 1992.

His Fighting Styles

Cus D’Amatto taught Mike Tyson the “peek-a-boo” style of defensive boxing, which involved a high guard and rapid head movements.

This is also an aggressive style of counter-punching which depends on charging the opponent, making him swing, and then taking advantage of openings.

Tyson was known for his extreme punching power as well as his ability to bob and weave. A considerable amount of Tyson’s punching power came from his legs, and he was known for landing a right hook and then an uppercut to finish fights.
